Dive-by-Dive Scoring
MINNEAPOLIS – Headlined by top-five showings for Steele Johnson and Greg Duncan, three Purdue divers finished among the top 10 in the individual events at the USA Diving Winter National Championships.
Johnson placed fourth on 10-meter and Duncan finished fifth on 3-meter. Ben Bramley's 10th-place showing on 10-meter rounded out the trio of top 10s.
The Boilermakers also won six medals in synchronized diving events this week at Winter Nationals. David Boudia and Johnson won gold in synchronized 3-meter to clinch the U.S. bid in the event for the FINA Diving World Cup in April. Brandon Loschiavo also qualified for the Diving World Cup by winning gold with David Dinsmore in synchronized 10-meter. Loschiavo won silver with Johnson in 10-meter synchro as well. Duncan was a bronze medalist with Grayson Campbell in 3-meter synchro.
At least one Purdue diver medaled at every USA Diving Winter Nationals meet held this decade.
Emily Bretscher (3-meter), Joe Cifelli (3-meter) and Maggie Merriman (10-meter) also represented the Boilermakers in an individual event. They all advanced to the semifinal of their events. Loschiavo performed 24 dives from 10-meter across the prelim and final Wednesday while competing with both Dinsmore and Johnson in the synchronized event. He was forced to withdraw from the individual 10-meter event after round 4 Friday due to injury.
Scoring was cumulative over the three rounds of competition in the individual events. Johnson climbed from ninth after the prelim to fourth in the final thanks to list scores of 432.40 in the semifinal and 429.85 in the final. He improved on his prelim score by 44.6 points in the semi.
Duncan (+43.7) and Bramley (+5.3) also improved on their prelim scores in the semifinal. Duncan climbed the leaderboard from ninth place after the prelim to fifth in both the semifinal and final.
The divers are the first group to depart for Purdue swimming & diving's winter training trip in Fort Lauderdale. They fly to Florida on Friday, Dec. 27. The swimmers join them in the Sunshine State on Sunday, Dec. 29.
