EAST LANSING, Mich. -
Redshirt freshman Kendall Coleman started his varsity career in impressive fashion Saturday, winning the 157-pound open title at the Michigan State Open, hosted by the Spartans at Jenison Fieldhouse. Coleman's title was one of seven placewinning efforts for the Boilermakers, and was joined near the top of the podium by fellow rookie Emil Soehnlen, senior Christian Brunner and juniors Devin Schroder and Max Lyon.

Also posting placewinning performances were sophomore Parker Filius, who took third at 141 pounds and true freshman Travis Ford-Melton, who was third in the freshman/sophomore division at 133 pounds.

Coleman took down several of the nation's preseason ranked wrestlers Saturday, starting with Illinois' Eric Barone, who is tabbed as high as No. 6 in the country by FloWrestling. He also knocked off Michigan's Will Lewan, a 2017 UWW Cadet World Champion, and ninth-ranked Anthony Artalona of Penn in the finals.

Soehnlen came up shy of back-to-back titles for the Boilermakers, taking second to Ohio State's Carson Kharchla at 165 pounds, while Schroder managed to avenge a controversial quarterfinal loss to Penn's Michael Colaiocco in the third-place match, 4-3. Lyon racked up 73 points in six matches Saturday, posting three technical falls and a major decision, while Filius advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of solid wins before taking no-contest wins to third in the wrestlebacks. Brunner rebounded from a narrow quarterfinal loss to win three straight and take third at 197 pounds.

The Boilermakers return to action next Saturday, heading to Albany, New York for the 2019 Journeymen Duals. Purdue will square off with Buffalo, Utah Valley and Arizona State on the day, with projections for several ranked matchups between the squads.
