WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Trent Pellini won an event for the third night in a row and Michael Juengel punctuated his breakout meet with a freshman record in the 200 backstroke, headlining the Boilermakers' accomplishments Saturday on the final day of the Purdue Invitational.
Mallory Jump placed fourth in the A final of the 200 backstroke via the sixth-fastest time (1:58.02) in program history. It was the freshman's fourth top-five finish in an A final this weekend. She also accomplished the feat in the 100 back, 100 fly and 200 IM. She eclipsed Purdue's freshman benchmarks in the 100 back and 200 IM.
Nationally ranked Louisville was victorious in the team scoring for both the men and women. The Purdue men finished second among the six-team field and the Purdue women were third of eight.
Pellini was victorious in the 200 IM on Thursday, the 100 breast Friday and then capped his big weekend with a victory in the 200 breast Saturday. He improved on his fourth-fastest time in program history in the 200 breast (1:55.30), dropping his career-best mark by more than a second. The junior also contributed to Purdue's victorious 200 free relay in the first event of Thursday's finals session. Saturday he punctuated his memorable meet with a 100 free split of 42.86 on the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay, helping the Boilermakers rally for a runner-up finish in the scoring heat. It was the best split of the race.
Juengel took third in the A final of the 200 back with a time of 1:43.75, eclipsing Brian Kiel's freshman record (1:43.93) that had stood since the 2011 Big Ten Championships. He moved into ninth place in program history overall. Juengel scored in all four of his individual events this weekend, highlighted by third-place showings in the A finals of both backstroke events.
Freshmen were the Purdue women's top finishers in all five individual events Saturday. Sylvia Kobylak (200 breast) and Kate Beavon (1,650 free) both placed third overall in their premier events. Kobylak moved into fifth place in program history with a time of 2:12.82, which doubled as an NCAA provisional qualifying B Cut.
Kendra Bowen capped her big weekend with a fifth-place showing in the A final of the 100 free while moving into 11th place in program history with a time of 49.81. She posted Purdue season-best times in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 free at the meet, scoring in all four events and qualifying for the A finals of the 100 and 200.
Emily Converse put together an inspired swim in the mile, competing in the event in a collegiate meet for the first time since the 2018 Big Ten Championships. In a return from multiple injuries, she not only finished fifth overall but also won her heat of the event.
Brett Riley was an A finalist in both the 200 back and 200 breast Saturday. He took third in the first event of the night (200 back), a feat matched by classmate Nick Sherman in the 200 breast. They both posted career-best times that moved them up Purdue's all-time lists, with Sherman's 200 breast time of 1:57.56 ranking eighth and Riley's mark of 1:45.45 in the 200 back ranking 13th.
Freshmen Elliot Cooper (1:47.50) and Lindsay Turner (1:59.73) were A finalists and Purdue's top finishers in the 200 fly. They each added their names to Purdue's all-time top 15 in the event. Riley Kishman won the B final of the 200 breast with a career-best time of 2:16.85 that officially placed the junior on the women's all-time lists in both breaststroke events.
Optional long course time trials are being held Sunday at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center as swimmers from multiple teams will pursue Olympic Trials cuts. Action begins at 10 a.m. ET.
