WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Trent Pellini finished strong to win the A final of the 200 individual medley and Mallory Jump eclipsed the women's freshman record in the same event, highlighting the Boilermakers' Day 1 successes at the Purdue Invitational on Thursday.
Pellini also contributed to the men's victory in the 200 freestyle relay to open the finals session, teaming up with Ryan Hrosik, Gabi Gomez Treig and Ryan Lawrence. Their time of 1:18.40 was good for eighth in program history and was just a tenth of a second off last season's team best from the Big Ten Championships. Lawrence out touched Louisville's Haridi Sameh by .14 hundredths of a second to win the event.
Jump (1:59.70) moved into fifth place in program history in the 200 IM while eclipsing Alex Clarke's freshman benchmark (1:59.86) from the 2016 Big Ten Championships. Jump placed third in the A final, accounting for the Purdue women's top individual finish of the night.
Hrosik's career-best time of 19.51 as the top qualifier in the 50 free prelims moved the sophomore into third place in program history. He took third in the A final.
Pellini (1:44.79 in prelims, 3rd in team history) out touched Louisville's Daniel Sos by .05 hundredths of a second to win the 200 IM after trailing by .16 hundredths entering the final 50 yards of the race. Meanwhile, he (20.00) also qualified for the B final of the 50 free, but was scratched from the event in the evening session.
Natalie Myers and Gretta DeCoursey joined Jump in the A final of the 200 IM. DeCoursey's career-best time of 1:59.99 in the prelims while winning her heat moved her into eighth place in program history. As the runner-up in the B final, Riley Kishman (2:00.94) posted the 12th-best time in the record book.
Freshman Kendra Bowen demonstrated her versatility by accounting for Purdue season-best times in both the 50 (23.23) and 500 free (4:50.86). Claire Abbasse and Bowen finished 2-3 in the B final of the 50 free.
Nick McDowell (4th) and Kate Beavon (5th) gave the Boilermakers a pair of top-five finishers in the A finals of the 500 free.
Led by Pellini, the Purdue men had five of the top nine finishers in the 200 IM, helping them rack up 74 points in the event. Nick Sherman, Brett Riley and Michael Juengel finished 5-6-7, with Sherman and Riley both moving up the program's all-time list with times of 1:46.94 (12th) and 1:47.81 (13th).
Juengel led off the 400 medley relay with a 100 backstroke split of 48.04, which vaulted the freshman into 10th place in program history. He teamed up with Pellini, Hrosik and Nikola Bjelajac on the medley relay. Together that quartet accounted for the eighth-fastest time (3:11.55) in the record book.
The women's 400 medley relay team of Tessa Wrightson, Jinq En Phee, Jump and Megan Johnson also accounted for the eighth-best time (3:39.34) in Purdue history.
The Purdue Invitational continues Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m.
