WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Mallory Jump and Nick McDowell both won a pair of individual events to lead the way as the Purdue swimming & diving teams emerged victorious at the annual Indiana Intercollegiates meet, which featured 12 universities this year.
The Purdue women won 10 of the 11 events in which they competed, all but the 200 freestyle relay. The Purdue men were victorious in nine events, all but the 100 breaststroke and 100 individual medley. The divers chose to compete in only one of the springboard events per gender.
Jump demonstrated her versatility in her first official collegiate meet, winning the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She also swam the butterfly leg on the victorious 200 medley to begin the day.
McDowell finished the season-opening weekend with five event victories. He swept the 200 and 500 freestyle Saturday. He teamed with Gabi Gomez Treig (50) and Keelan Hart (100) for a Purdue sweep of the freestyle events.
The Purdue women had at least the top four finishers in five events – the 100 and 200 free, 100 back, 100 fly, 100 IM and 1-meter diving.
Including their event winners, the Purdue men won 12 total heats in the swimming events. Senior Luke Ingram won his heats in both the 100 back and 100 IM.
Ryan Hrosik contributed to both relay winners, anchoring the 200 medley team to victory and swimming the leadoff leg for the 200 free team to close the meet. Nathan Barsanti (100 fly), Ryan Lawrence (100 back) and Gomez Treig (50 free) all won an individual event and were part of a relay winner. Jinq En Phee (100 breast) joined Jump in accomplishing that same feat for the women.
Claire Abbasse and Nick Sherman accounted for a pair of second-place finishes. Abbasse was the runner-up behind teammates Jade Knueppel (50) and Megan Johnson (100) in the freestyle sprints. Sherman was the runner-up to Lawrence in the 100 back and McDowell in the 200 free. Natalie Myers finished among the top three in both of her individual events. She was out touched by Gretta DeCoursey by .03 hundredths of a second in the 100 IM and then finished third in the 100 back.
The Boilermakers return to action Friday when they host Notre Dame at 5 p.m. ET.
