BARK RIVER, Mich. – The Purdue men's golf team opened its season in impressive fashion, surging to the lead after 36 holes at the inaugural Island Resort Intercollegiate held at Sage Run Golf Club on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The Boilermakers totaled a 36-hole total of 11-under par 565 on rounds of 280 and 285 to lead East Carolina (-7) by four shots and Liberty by five shots (-6). UCF, the final team under par through 36 holes, is fourth at 3-under par 573.
Purdue has three players on the counting team in the top seven as the Boilermakers look for a title in their first action of the season.
Junior Joe Weiler shares the individual lead at 6-under par 138 after rounds of 68 and 70. His 68 in the first round was a career-best tally, playing a five-hole stretch midway through the round in 5-under par. He then birdied the final two holes in the second round to tie Michigan State's James Piot for the individual lead at 6-under par 138.
Playing in their first career tournament, freshmen Nick Dentino and Peyton Snoeberger are in the hunt for their first top-10 finishes. Dentino, the 2019 Indiana high school state champion, is sixth at 4-under par 140 after identical rounds of 70. In his first round, Dentino was 2-over par through seven holes before playing the final 11 holes in 4-under par. He then would birdie his final two holes in round two to surge into the top 10 at the end.
Snoeberger is tied for seventh at 3-under par 141 (71-70). Like Dentino, Snoeberger was 2-over par through five holes, but would play his final 13 holes in 3-under par for a 1-under 71 in the first round. He would also birdie his final two holes in round two to finish 36 holes in the top 10.
Juniors Jason Hong and Cole Bradley are tied for 32nd at 4-over par 148.
Playing as an individual, Andrew Farraye is tied for 14th at even-par 144 (72-72), while Thomas Lewis is tied for 34th at 5-over par 149 (69-80).
Final-round action begins Monday morning at the Sage Run Golf Club.
