WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball committed four errors over the first four innings and struck out 11 times, a season-high total at home, losing the middle game of its series with Michigan State 5-1 Saturday at Alexander Field.
The Spartans (15-29, 4-12 B1G) scored a single run in each of the first three innings, capitalizing on a pair of errors at third base as well as two walks and three wild pitches.
Meanwhile, MSU starter Mitchell Tyranski matched his career high with 10 strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings of six-hit ball. The Boilermakers (18-27, 7-9 B1G) did not have multiple base runners against the lefty until the bottom of the eighth, when Tyrasnski (2-7) issued his only walk of the night.
Michigan State scored its early runs on a sacrifice fly, two-out RBI single and wild pitch on a two-out pitch out. Andrew Bohm actually struck out the 4-5-6 hitters in order in third inning. But Marty Bechina reached safely on a throwing error to open the frame, coming around to score after a passed ball and two wild pitches. Bohm (0-7) was only able to retire nine of the 18 batters he faced, but two of three runs he allowed were unearned.
Entering the night, Purdue had committed only one error in the first six games of its season-long homestand.
The Boilermakers put their leadoff man aboard four times, but could not cash in until the ninth inning. Zac Fascia's RBI single extended his hit streak to nine consecutive games. Cole McKenzie walked to open the frame, extending his reached base safely streak to 13 straight games. He had reached base multiple times in each of the first 12 games of the streak.
Skyler Hunter's two-out triple in the sixth inning was his Big Ten-leading sixth of the season and 11th career. It was also his 196th career hit as he continues to close in on 200. The switch-hitter is just the seventh player in program history with six triples in a season. He's also alone in fifth place on Purdue's all-time list with 11 career three-baggers.
Tyler Powers had two hits for the second night in a row and also drew a leadoff walk in the eighth inning.
James Kulak retired six of the seven batters he faced over two innings of hitless relief. But the leadoff walk he issued in the sixth inning came around to score after he gave way to Austin Peterson, who finished off the game while pitching a team-high 3 2/3 innings Saturday. Peterson struck out four.
Fascia threw out runners at second and third base, cutting down his Big Ten-leading 16th base stealer of the season to erase a leadoff single in the seventh inning.
Sunday's rubber game is slated for 1 p.m. ET. The Boilermakers are 3-3 in rubber games this season.
