WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
– Purdue baseball overcame deficits of 8-0 and 9-1 to pull even in the fifth inning, but Ohio State outscored the Boilermakers 4-2 over the final four frames to recover for a 13-11 victory in a Saturday slugfest at Alexander Field.

The Buckeyes (31-24, 12-12 B1G) homered a stadium-record six times as part of a 23-hit attack, going deep four times in an eight-run first inning. Ohio State qualified for the Big Ten Tournament with the series sweep during the final weekend of the regular season. Had the Bucks lost any of the three games, they would not have been part of the eight-team field next week in Omaha.

Zac Fascia's three-run double highlighted Purdue's seven-run fourth inning, its most-productive frame at Alexander Field this year. Bryce Bonner's two-out RBI double the next inning tied the score at 9-9.

The Boilermakers (20-34, 7-16 B1G) lost their final eight Big Ten games of the season while posting a 3-8 record in the month of May.

With the wind blowing out to center field on a rare hitter-friendly day at Alexander, Saturday was the highest-scoring game of Purdue's season. The teams combined for 24 runs on 33 hits, 13 going for extra bases. Six different Buckeyes had three hits and their 23 hits were one shy of the stadium record. Ohio State hit three consecutive long balls, all to a different part of the field, in the first inning.

Forever Boilermakers.

SATURDAY NOTABLES
Andrew Bohm struck out five of the 12 batters he faced over 2 2/3 innings of relief, recording his 100th collegiate strikeout in the process. He's just the eighth Boilermaker to reach that milestone as a sophomore, joining classmate Trent Johnson as Purdue pitchers to accomplish the feat this year. Fellow sophomore Bo Hofstra struck out three Saturday and finished just three Ks shy of the century mark and a place in that exclusive group.
Bohm and Johnson both finished the season with a team-high 73 strikeouts, joining Patrick J. Smith (70) as Boilermakers with 70 Ks this year. They all averaged more than 10 Ks per nine innings, helping Purdue post a program-record mark of 9.10 Ks per nine as a team this season. The Boilermakers broke the overall strikeouts record last Saturday at Illinois and established the new benchmark at 477.
Cole McKenzie singled twice and walked twice Saturday, finishing his junior season riding a personal-best 22-game reached base safely streak as well as a nine-game hit streak. He led the team in hits (65), walks (25), stolen bases (10) and batting average (.317) this year.
Conner Tomasic's first collegiate extra-base hit was an RBI triple in the sixth inning, Purdue's Big Ten-leading 17th triple of the season.
Cory Brooks' career-opening streak of consecutive scoreless innings ended at 11 1/3 when he surrendered the first home run of the day in the first inning.
Skyler Hunter made an impressive running catch before crashing into the wall in left center to end the eighth inning. That play prevented a two-out, two-run double for Dominic Canzone. It would have been Canzone's fourth double of the day.
Ohio State designated hitter Brent Todys homered in all three games of the series after connecting for a solo shot in the eighth inning Saturday. Todys homered vs. both Smith and Hofstra, who had surrendered just one home run in a combined 93 1/3 innings this season entering the series. He accounted for three of OSU's 10 home runs over the 27 innings.
Entering the weekend, Purdue pitching had given up just five home runs in 178 2/3 innings over it last 20 games dating back to April 12.

After Conner Tomasic's RBI triple, OSU relief ace Andrew Magno (4-3) faced 14 consecutive batters without giving up another hit. Yet the Boilermakers still brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth inning. Bryce Bonner drew his third walk of the day to extend the game and Cole McKenzie singled up the middle to end Magno's hitless streak. But the game ended on a fly out to left field.

Senior Nick Evarts enjoyed a productive day in his final game as a Boilermaker. He was 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. He delivered an RBI single in the first inning and an RBI double in the fourth.

Connor Pohl hit two of OSU's home runs Saturday, going deep in the first and sixth innings. His three-run shot in the sixth broke the 9-9 tie. Pohl was the only batter Matt Moore faced after Purdue went back to the bullpen to set up the lefty-lefty matchup. Moore allowed as many inherited runners to score on that one swing as he had in 26 relief appearances this season entering the day.

The Boilermakers will have to bid adieu to seniors Ryan Beard, Evarts and Smith, but could return over 25 letterwinners for the 2020 season.
