WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue catcher Zac Fascia channeled Moses Malone into a memorable night at Alexander Field on Tuesday, going 4-for-4 with all 4 runs scored in the Boilermakers' 4-3 victory vs. Xavier.
Fascia had all four of his hits while leading off an inning. He doubled twice, hit his fourth home run of the season and finished just a triple shy of the cycle. The junior extended his team-long hit streak to 15 consecutive games and now has six extra-base hits in the last four games, registering a .941 slugging percentage over the last four.
A bases-loaded walk to pinch hitter Johnny Sage plated the go-ahead in the bottom of the eighth. Bo Hofstra worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his seventh save of the season. The Boilermakers (21-30) snapped a four-game losing streak in one-run games that dated back to April 3.
TUESDAY NOTABLES
• Zac Fascia became just the sixth Boilermaker this decade with a double in four consecutive games. His 15-game hit streak is the longest by a Boilermaker since 2011.
• Fascia joined fellow Ontario native Owen Jansen as Boilermakers with a four-hit game this year. Jansen also had three extra-base hits, all doubles, in his four-hit effort in the season opener.
• Seven Purdue pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, recording their 23rd double-figure strikeout total of the year. Fascia has been behind the plate for 16 of those games.
• Cole McKenzie's leadoff single in the seventh inning extended his reached base safely streak to a season-high 19 consecutive games. He has been on base in every game over the last month.
• Ben Nisle and Nick Evarts were both in the starting lineup together for the first time since March 9. Evarts was 2-for-3 Tuesday and has reached base safely in 9 of 16 plate appearances since returning to the starting lineup May 7.
• Matt Moore surrendered the game-tying run on a two-out single in the eighth inning, but earned the victory nonetheless to improve to 5-0 this season. He's in line to become the fourth Boilermaker in program history to have a flawless winning percentage with a minimum five decisions.
• Purdue posted a 7-5 record in midweek action this season, winning its last five midweek contests over the last month. Xavier (23-28) is in first place in the Big East standings.
Milo Beam and Powers also walked in the bottom of the eighth to help the Boilermakers plate the go-ahead run.
Howe tripled over the center fielder's head in the fourth inning, recording his second three-bagger of the season and Purdue's Big Ten-leading 16th.
James Kulak, Dalton Parker and Hofstra all worked a 1-2-3 inning in the win. Conner Tomasic (3), Andrew Bohm (2) and Hofstra (2) all finished with multiple strikeouts, accounting for seven of the 10 Ks.
