PULLMAN, Wash. – On a day with near-perfect conditions, the Purdue men's golf team couldn't make a move, slipping to 10th at the NCAA Golf Regional Championships held at Palouse Ridge Golf Club on the campus of Washington State University.
The Boilermakers recorded a 1-over par 281 to fall to a 10th-place tie at 4-under par 556 (275-281) after 36 holes. Purdue fell 19 shots back of leader Texas A&M (-23), but remains just eight shots out of fifth place – the cutline to advance to the NCAA National Championships which begins in 10 days in Arkansas.
Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, BYU and Colorado State (-12) round out the top five. UCLA is sixth (-9) and is followed by South Carolina (-8), Kent State (-6) and Florida (-6).
Ten of the 14 teams posted under-par rounds and the round two scoring average was 70.64, just 0.64 strokes over par.
Head coach Rob Bradley knows the Boilermakers missed a chance Tuesday, but that it's not over by any means.
"We had our chances today, but our golf wasn't just good enough. We counted 15 bogeys and a double bogey on a course that is yielding a lot of low rounds," Bradley said. "I don't think we have played great golf this week, so that is encouraging. We still have a chance, but we need a special round tomorrow. We need to make less mistakes and more birdies and then get a little help from some other teams. We really need everyone to step up."
The round wasn't without highlights.
Senior Timmy Hildebrand remains in the top 10 after a second-round 69 to sit in T-9th at 6-under par 134 (65-69). Hildebrand's 69 today was his 11th round this season in the 60s, now tied with Lee Williamson (2001-02) for the most in school history in a single year. He has 20 rounds of even or under par this season, good for third in Purdue history.
Cole Bradley also turned in an even-par round 70, and is now in T-26th at 2-under par 138 (68-70). Bradley's 17 rounds of even-par or better this year are seventh in school history.
Jarle Volden is T-40th at 1-over par 141 (70-71), while Joe Weiler is T-60th at 6-over par 146 (72-74).
Freshman Andrew Farraye was subbed in for round two, shooting a 1-over par 71.
Purdue will tee off at 11:55 AM ET, off hole No. 10, and will be paired with Michigan State and Northern Colorado.
