PULLMAN, Wash. – The Purdue men's golf team overcame a slow start to finish round one in a tie for sixth at the NCAA Golf Regional Championships held at Palouse Ridge Golf Club on the campus of Washington State University.
The Boilermakers totaled a first-round score of 5-under par 275 to finish round one just six shots off the lead and two shots out of fifth place. Texas A&M leads at 11-under par and is followed by Oklahoma (-10), Georgia Tech (-9), BYU (-8) and Michigan State (-7). Purdue is tied for sixth with UCLA, Florida and South Carolina, while Kent State is 10th at 4-under par 276.
"I really like the way we responded after a tough start today. The guys stayed patient and got it turned around in the middle part of the round," head coach Rob Bradley said. "Timmy (Hildebrand) played an outstanding round and really kept us in it, and I thought Cole (Bradley) and Jarle (Volden) played solid. They figured out how to get it to the clubhouse when they didn't have their best. We're really looking forward to tomorrow and how we will respond."
Purdue's 275 is the lowest, 18-hole score ever recorded by the Boilermakers in NCAA play, while the 5-under par is third in relation to par. The 275 is the seventh-lowest 18-hole score in school history.
Purdue's counting team started the day 4-over par through the first four holes of the day, but then played the next 11 holes in 10-under par to push up the leaderboard. Three players shot even or under par on a day when the individual scoring average was slightly under par and 11 teams finished 279 or lower.
Leading the charge was senior Timmy Hildebrand, who sits tied for fourth after a sensational round of 5-under par 65, one shot off the lead. His lone blemish was a bogey on his 17th hole, which he quickly erased with a 12-foot birdie putt on his 18th hole to push the Boilermakers into the top six.
His 65 is tied for the lowest round by a Boilermaker in NCAA action in school history and is tied for the fifth-lowest, 18-hole score in school history.
Sophomore Cole Bradley played his last eight holes in 3-under par to overcome a bogey on his first hole of the day to shoot a 2-under par 68, good for T-19th.
Jarle Volden is tied for 37th after shooting even-par 70, in a round that wasn't without highlights, including a sensational par on the par-5 5th hole after hitting into a hazard on his third shot. His approach from the red-staked hazard came to rest about four feet from the hole, where he tapped in for par. He also made a big birdie putt on his 17th hole (No. 8) after suffering a bogey on his 16th hole (No. 7).
Joe Weiler is tied for 58th after a whirlwind 2-over par 72. Weiler was 2-over par through eight holes, but then recorded four straight birdies to move to 2-under par. He would then bogey four of his next five holes for his opening-round 72.
Jason Hong is tied for 66th at 5-over par 75.
The Boilermakers will be paired with Florida and South Carolina in round two, teeing off hole No. 1, beginning at 11:25 a.m. ET.
