WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana State scored a single run in each of the final two innings to defeat Purdue baseball in 4-3 fashion for the second time this season.
The Boilermakers (10-17) overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead, but could not keep ISU runners from scoring late in the game after the Sycamores (22-4) had their leadoff man reach base safely to open the final two frames.
Purdue's four-game win streak was snapped Wednesday. The Boilermakers have played in three consecutive one-run games for the first time since April 2016. Additionally, it was only the program's third loss under head coach Mark Wasikowski when leading after seven innings.
Indiana State improved to 6-1 against Big Ten opponents this year. Four of those seven games have been one-run affairs.
Ryan Howe posted his third straight multi-hit game, delivering a two-out RBI triple in the fourth inning and a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. Nolan Brimbury's opposite-field bloop double down the left field line led to the go-ahead run in the ninth inning. It was Brimbury's first at-bat of the season. With runners on the corners, Trent Johnson struck out ISU's No. 3 hitter, Roby Enriquez, after a lengthy battle that featured numerous foul balls. But Romero Harris picked up his teammate with a go-ahead sacrifice fly, squaring up a fastball with an 0-2 count.
A wild pitch allowed ISU to score the tying run in the eighth inning after a leadoff walk and an error set up the scoring opportunity. Johnson came back to strike out the final two batters of the frame, stranding the go-ahead run at third.
Johnny Sage delivered a two-out, pinch-hit RBI double in the fifth inning, bringing Purdue even on the scoreboard at 2-2. Sage also doubled off a runner at first base with a strong throw from left field after making a catch near the line in the seventh inning.
Indiana State got an outfield assist from center fielder Luke Fegen, who threw out Nick Evarts at the plate as the runner tagged up on a fly ball in the bottom of the second.
Tyler Powers reached over the dugout rail to catch a foul pop up in the fifth inning. The sophomore also scored the game-tying and go-ahead runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Evan Albrecht's sacrifice fly plated Powers in the bottom of the seventh after Powers took second on a wild pitch and stole third base.
