Three Boilermakers are in the top five, leading Purdue to a five-shot lead after 18 holes at the Big Ten Championships, contested at the Philadelphia Cricket Club outside of the City of Brotherly Love.

Purdue recorded a first-round score of 2-over par 282 on the par-70 layout, five shots clear of Minnesota and Illinois in second place and nine shots ahead of Michigan State and Rutgers in fourth place.

The Boilermakers were outstanding all day, leading the field in birdies (16) and par-4 scoring (+5). The score could have been better, but the Boilermakers finished tied for last in the field in par-3 scoring (+9), the result of playing the difficult par-3 5th and 15th holes in a combined 10-over par.

Jarle Volden led Purdue with a 2-under par 68, good for second place three shots behind Minnesota's Angus Ferguson. Volden recorded five birdies with his only hiccup being a double-bogey on the par-3 15th hole. Volden recorded his 13th round of even-par or better in 24 rounds this year.

Timmy Hildebrand was a shot behind at 1-under par 69, good for a third-place tie.  It marked his 18th round of even-par or better this year, the fourth most in school history, and was his ninth round in the 60s, the second most in school history.

Joe Weiler closed out Purdue's triumvirate in the top-five with an even-par 70, good for a fifth-place tie after 18 holes. Weiler played a steady round, carding three birdies and three bogeys to go along with 12 pars.

Cole Bradley is tied for 36th at 5-over par 75, while Jason Hong is tied for 64th at 9-over par 79.

Purdue will be paired with Minnesota (+7) and Illinois (+7) at 9:45 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1. Purdue is aiming for its first Big Ten title since 1981.
