PHILADELPHIA The Purdue men's golf team remained in the hunt for the Big Ten Championship on a brutal, wind-swept day at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

The Boilermakers shot a second-round score of 29-over par 309 to fall to third place after owning the outright lead by five shots following Friday's opening round. However, Purdue sits in third place just one shot behind Minnesota and Illinois. The Gophers and Illini are at 30-over par 590, while Purdue is third at 31-over par 591 (282-309). Michigan and Michigan State are tied for fourth at 35-over par 595, while Nebraska is sixth at 40-over par 600.

With winds howling all day upwards of 40 miles per hour, the 14 teams struggled to put up decent scores. Just one team, Michigan, broke 300 on Saturday and only three more (Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan State) broke 305. Individually, Michigan State's Donnie Trosper posted the low round at even-par 70, with just 16 of 70 players shooting 75 or better.
The scoring average in round two was 78.30, almost four shots worse than round one, and round two featured just 89 birdies among the 70 players.

Timmy Hildebrand grinded his way to a 4-over par 74, good for a two-round total of 143 (69-74), placing him in a third-place tie after 36 holes. Hildebrand was 4-over par through nine holes before playing the back nine in even-par. He is three shots off the individual lead set by Trosper (70-70=140).

Jarle Volden also started slowly, but is just outside the top 10 in 11th place at 8-over par 148 (68-80). Volden was 7-over par through nine holes before playing the back nine in 3-over par.

Cole Bradley is tied for 34th at 13-over par 153 (75-78), Joe Weiler is tied for 42nd at 15-over par 155 (70-85) and Jason Hong is tied for 48th at 16-over par 156 (79-77). Hong was 6-over par through six holes in Saturday's round, before playing the last 12 holes in just 1-over par.

For the second straight day, Purdue (+31) will be paired with Minnesota (+30) and Illinois (+30) at 9:25 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1. Purdue is aiming for its first Big Ten title since 1981.
