WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's golf team pieced together its best 36 holes of the season and sits in second place at the Boilermaker Invitational, one shot behind leader Illinois State.
Purdue recorded rounds of 278-283 for a 36-hole total of 15-under par 561. Illinois State sits at 16-under par 560 (283-277), while No. 5-ranked Oklahoma is third at 14-under par 562 (283-279). Northwestern is fourth at 6-under par 570 (289-281).
The final round is scheduled for Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. ET, but with the weather calling for rain overnight and showers all day, Saturday's results could go a long way in determining Purdue's postseason fate. The Boilermakers lead in big head-to-head matchups with Oklahoma, Northwestern, Kent State and Notre Dame, all teams ranked in the nation's top 70.
Playing in the counting lineup for the first time since late October, Jason Hong took full advantage, firing a 36-hole total of 6-under par 138 after identical 3-under par 69s. Hong recorded eight birdies and just two bogeys to sit in T-3rd entering tomorrow's final round. Hong's 69s marked his second and third rounds in the 60s this year, and just the fourth of his career.
Timmy Hildebrand is tied for ninth at 4-under par 140 (68-72). Hildebrand overcame a double-bogey in round one and a triple-bogey in round two to record his 16th and 17th rounds of even-par or better this year, the sixth most in school history. It marked his eighth round in the 60s this year, the third most in a season in school history.
Jarle Volden is the third Boilermaker in the top 20, sitting in T-12th at 3-under par 141 (70-71). Volden was steady in the second round, recording 15 pars, two birdies and one bogey.
Cole Bradley is tied for 22nd at 1-under par 143 (71-72), while Joe Weiler is tied for 45th at 3-over par 147 (76-71).
Playing as individuals, freshmen Andrew Farraye is tied for 18th at 2-under par 142 (72-70) and Andrew Lewis is T-42nd at 2-over par 146 (74-72).
