WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Jackie Smailis eclipsed another Purdue backstroke record at the annual Boiler-Make-It Last Chance meet Saturday at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
Smailis posted a time of 52.72 in the 100 back to eclipses Allie Smith's record (52.81) that had stood since 2011. Smailis broke Smith's records in both the 100 and 200 back over the last week, besting the 200 standard at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 1:54.61. With the 200 back record (1:55.72) dating back to 2010, they were the longest-standing benchmarks on the board.
Tessa Wrightson eclipsed the Purdue freshman record in the 100 back for the second time this season, dropping the first-year standard to 54.41 Saturday while also moving into fifth place in program history. She had registered a time of 54.54 at the IU Invitational in November.
Taite Kitchel posted a team season-best time of 1:56.13 in the 200 butterfly. She dropped 1.25 seconds off her time from the IU Invitational and moved into the top 40 nationally, putting the senior in position to earn a berth to the NCAA Championships if things break the right way. The top 37 or 38 in an individual event have traditionally qualified for NCAAs the last few years.
Maizie Seidl moved into fifth place in program history with a career-best time of 1:46.08 in the 200 freestyle. In the same event, Gretta DeCoursey (1:47.76) also improved on her 12th-fastest mark in program history.
Danielle Auckley (49.65) and Natalie Myers (50.10) accounted for Purdue's two fastest times this season in the 100 free.
Swimming qualifiers for the Women's NCAA Championships are expected to be announced Wednesday, March 6.
The Purdue men are also hosting a Boiler-Make-It meet this season after Ohio State had to cancel its NCAA Last Chance meet. The Boilermakers will welcome swimmers from Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Louisville, Notre Dame, Princeton and West Virginia to the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center on Sunday, March 10. Prelims are set for 10 a.m. ET and finals at 2 p.m.
