IOWA CITY, Iowa – Trent Pellini and Joe Young were part of program records for the third night in a row and Greg Duncan won bronze in another springboard event, headlining Friday at the Big Ten Championships for Purdue men's swimming & diving.
Pellini eclipsed the 100 breaststroke program record in the prelims (51.85) and then lowered it again (51.76) while finishing fourth in the A final. He's the first Boilermaker ever to break 52 seconds in the event, eclipsing the previous Purdue benchmark (52.49) by .73 hundredths of a second by the end of the night.
Young bested his own record in the 100 backstroke (46.14) for the second night in a row, also finishing fourth in the A final. They were both part of the Boilermakers' record-setting 200 and 400 medley relay teams the previous two nights.
While Duncan won bronze in 3-meter diving with the fourth-best score (454.45) in program history, Young and Pellini both finished just shy of also winning medals by an agonizing few hundredths of a second. The Boilermakers had three student-athletes score in 3-meter diving (64 points), the 100 back (44) and 100 fly (33) Friday.
