WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Highlighted by four more top-five finishers at the Zone C Championships, the same quintet of Purdue divers again qualified for the NCAA Championships in the springboard events.
Emily Bretscher, Joe Cifelli, Greg Duncan, Emily Meaney and Morgan Meixner have now all qualified for NCAAs on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. Meixner led the way with a third-place finish Friday on 1-meter. Duncan (4th on 3-meter), Cifelli (5th on 3-meter) and Bretscher (5th on 1-meter) also finished top five for the second day in a row.
Meaney enjoyed the most thrilling day, rallying to not only qualify for the 1-meter final, but also finish top 12 overall to earn another bid to NCAAs. She was in 24th place after the fifth round of the 1-meter prelim. She climbed 12 spots on the leaderboard over the final seven rounds of the day.
After auto-qualifying for the national championship meet on 3-meter Thursday, all Meaney needed was a top-12 finish Friday to add 1-meter to her schedule at NCAAs. She pulled it off by improving on her prelim score by 12.9 points in the final. In the battle for 12th entering the last round of the final, she held the spot by less than a point. The Aussie closed her list with her highest score of the day (51.60) to comfortably take 12th.
Ben Bramley also finished 12th on 3-meter Friday in his debut at Zones. A missed dive in round 5 of the final cost him an opportunity to be among the eight NCAAs auto-qualifiers in the event. However, his 12th-place finish was also significant. If he can finish among the top eight on platform Saturday, he'll also be able to compete on 3-meter at NCAAs. Bramley's top event is the platform.
Bretscher, Duncan and Meixner all joined Meaney in improving on their prelim scores in the final. Cifelli was very consistent, with his list scores differing by only a half of a point.
Saturday's 10-meter action at Zones features the women competing at 11 a.m. ET and the men's event following at approximately 2 p.m.
