JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Andrew Bohm and Matt Moore combined for 11 strikeouts, teaming up for Purdue baseball's sixth double-figure strikeout game of the season, but the Boilermakers were limited to just six singles in a 4-0 series-opening loss at Jacksonville State on Friday.
Three of the four JSU (9-10) runners that came around to score reached base safely via a walk. Andrew Naismith connected for a two-out, two-run homer in the six inning and finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Bohm struck out a season-high seven and induced a pair of 6-4-3 double plays over six innings of four-run ball, putting together the longest outing of his Purdue career.
But he was out pitched by JSU starter Garrett Farmer (2-0), who faced only 23 batters over seven innings. The right-hander picked off a pair of runners at first base and erased another single by inducing a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
The Boilermakers (3-13) actually put their leadoff man aboard in each of the final four innings, but finished the night 1-for-15 with runners on base. That lone hit was a bloop single by Charlie Nasuti in eighth inning, ending Purdue's 0-for-23 drought by pinch hitters to begin the season.
Bohm (0-2) retired the Gamecocks' 2-3-4 hitters in order to escape a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, keeping it a 2-0 game. Purdue had failed to get an out on consecutive bunts to set the stage for the dramatic escape. Bohm struck out the first two batters of that stretch. He finished three other innings with a K as well.
But the leadoff walks he issued in both the first and fifth innings came around to score. There was a two-out walk in front of Naismith's home run in the sixth inning. Nic Gaddis delivered a two-out RBI double to open the scoring in the first inning.
Moore struck out the side, all looking, while working around a two-out double and hit batter in the eighth inning.
Owen Jansen singled in each of his first two at-bats as the only Boilermaker to finish with multiple hits. Cole McKenzie singled and walked in his final two plate appearances, extending his team-long reached base safely streak to 10 consecutive games. Skyler Hunter singled to lead off the fourth inning and has hit safely in all six games of spring break.
Purdue was shut out in a series opener for the first time since losing a 1-0 pitcher's duel at Tulane in the opening game of its 2018 spring break trip.
