WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – All five of Purdue's divers competing on the springboards Thursday at the Zone C Diving Championships finished among the top five to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Emily Bretscher was victorious on 3-meter. Greg Duncan (1-meter) and Emily Meaney (3-meter) both took third. Seniors Joe Cifelli (1-meter) and Morgan Meixner (3-meter) are also heading back to the NCAA Championships.
Cifelli joined Casey Matthews as the only Purdue divers to be four-year qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. Matthews was the women's 3-meter national champion in 2013.
The quintet of top-five finishes earned the Boilermakers the vital automatic qualifying bids to the national championship meet. Now that they have all auto-qualified, Bretscher, Cifelli, Duncan, Meaney and Meixner only have to finish among the top 12 in their additional events at Zones this week to add those events to their schedules at the NCAA Championships.
Meaney and Meixner qualified for NCAAs for the third consecutive season. As sophomores, Bretscher and Duncan are both 2-for-2 in qualifying for the national championship meet. Meaney will have an opportunity to join Cifelli and Matthews in the exclusive 4-for-4 club next year.
Meixner posted a personal season-best score of 305.50 in the prelim. Bretscher and Meaney both improved on their prelim scores in the final. Bretscher's list score climbed from 332.25 to 355.80. The 23.55-point improvement helped her win the event after trailing Olympian Jessica Parratto of Indiana by 16.55 points at the end of the preliminary round. Scores carry over from the prelims to finals at Zones.
The Zone C Diving Championships continue Friday at 1 p.m. ET with the women on 1-meter and the men on 3-meter. Six Boilermakers are scheduled to compete Friday.
