WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue pitching dominated the early and late innings, but a trio of errors helped Milwaukee score six times over the middle innings and spoil the home opener at Alexander Field 6-1 Tuesday.
Four of MKE's six runs were unearned, including all three in the fifth inning that gave the visitors control of the game.
Meanwhile, seven Milwaukee (7-6) pitchers teamed up to limit the Boilermakers (3-11) to one run on six singles. Purdue stranded eight men on base and also had a runner thrown out at third base in the seventh inning.
The Boilermakers' 13-game home win streak, which dated back to April 24 of last season, came to an end in the earliest home opener in program history. Entering the day it was the second longest active home win streak in the nation.
Shortstop Evan Albrecht made the top defensive play of the day, a diving catch of a line drive near the second base bag. Not only did he take away a likely single up the middle, but Albrecht also doubled off the runner at first base. That play coupled catcher Zac Fascia cutting down a base stealer at second base to end the second inning helped starter Kyle Wade (0-1) face only nine batters through the first three innings.
Matt Moore, Hayden Wynja and Conner Tomasic teamed up to retire MKE's final 12 batters of the game in order. In his regular-season debut at Alexander Field, Wynja went six-up, six-down against the three through eight portion of the Panthers' lineup.

Owen Jansen fielded cleanly, but double clutched on the transfer and then pulled the first baseman off the bag with his throw. After a pitching change and a hit batter, MKE's No. 3 hitter Trevor Schwecke delivered a two-run single up the middle. Schwecke also plated the game's first run with a sacrifice fly an inning earlier.
Led by Wade's 4 2/3 innings of five-hit ball, Purdue pitchers did not issue a walk in the game. But after racking up 37 strikeouts in 28 innings this past weekend in a series win vs. NJIT, the Boilermakers only recorded two strikeouts against a veteran Milwaukee lineup. The Panthers' 6-7-8 hitters finished the day a combined 6-for-11 with three runs scored and a two-RBI single from Zach Nogalski in the sixth inning.
Skyler Hunter singled home Tyler Powers in the fifth inning for the Boilermakers' lone run. He and Fascia both finished with a pair of hits. Hunter was robbed of a two-out RBI single in the second inning on a diving catch by left fielder Colin Kreiter.
Cole McKenzie extended his reached base safely streak to eight consecutive games, but Johnny Sage's eight-game hit streak came to an end.
The Boilermakers continue their five-game week with a trip to Terre Haute on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. ET first pitch at Indiana State.
