IOWA CITY, Iowa – Purdue men's swimming & diving enjoyed recording-setting performances in three events and Greg Duncan won bronze in 1-meter diving, highlighting the first full day of action at the Big Ten Championships for the Boilermakers.
Purdue excelled on the 1-meter springboard, with Joe Cifelli, Brandon Loschiavo and Duncan all qualifying for the championship final.
Nikola Acin led the way as five Boilermakers broke 19.90 seconds in the 50 freestyle. In both the prelims and finals, Acin (19.51, 19.54) and Ryan Hrosik (19.68, 19.75) each eclipsed the Purdue freshman record (19.86) entering the day. They improved on their prelim times while winning the B and C finals of the event.
The Boilermakers established a program record in a medley relay for the second night in a row. Joe Young, Trent Pellini, Erik Juliusson and James Boone teamed up for a time of 3:07.70, besting a mark from 2017. Purdue has now broken that record twice in the last three seasons after the 2009 medley relay team's record stood for seven years. Young, Pellini and Juliusson have been part of both medley relay records this week.
On the opening leg of the 400 medley relay, Young eclipsed his own program record in the 100 backstroke. He posted a time drop of two tenths of a second with a split of 46.39. The senior gets another shot at the record Friday when the 100 back is featured as an individual event.
Duncan claimed bronze in his debut at the Big Ten Championships. He improved on his prelim score by 50 points in the final, moving into fifth place in program history with a list score of 420.65. Cifelli took fifth and Loschiavo seventh in the championship final. Freshman Ben Bramley was fourth in the consolation final, giving the Boilermakers four of the top 12 finishers.
Juliusson was an A finalist in the 200 IM, moving into third place in program history with a career-best time of 1:44.83 in the prelims. Trent Pellini (1:45.14) scored in the B final and moved up to fourth in the team record book.
Ryan Lawrence (19.75) also moved into Purdue's all-time top 10 in the 50 free with a time of 19.75 while qualifying for the C final. Nikola Bjelajac (19.87) and Gabi Gomez Treig (19.88) also posted career-best times that double as NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts). They moved up the program's all-time top 15 list as well.
Nick McDowell scored in the C final of the 500 free, posting a Purdue season-best time of 4:22.66 in the prelims.
