PALM COAST, Fla. – The Purdue men's golf team opened the spring season with mixed results on day one of the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
The Boilermakers posted an 0-0-2 record, drawing with Michigan and Nebraska during the day. Purdue was able to advance in the winners' bracket after winning on a tiebreaker in the first round with Michigan, but then lost on a tiebreaker to Nebraska to deny a trip into the semifinals.
The Nebraska setback drops Purdue into the consolation bracket, where it will face Northwestern in the morning match.
Sophomore Cole Bradley posted the best day for the Boilermakers, winning both of his Friday matches. Bradley defeated Michigan's Brent Ito in the morning match by a 4-and-2 tally, before defeating Nebraska's Jace Guthmiller in the afternoon match, 3-and-2.
Timmy Hildebrand, Jarle Volden and freshman Andrew Lewis also picked up victories Friday. Lewis, appearing in his first match-play event at Purdue, posted a 1-0-1 record. Volden's win improves his career record to 10-3-0 in his fourth Big Ten Match Play Championship event. Hildebrand also picked up his seventh win in the event.
