PALM COAST, Fla. – After drawing in its first two matches during the weekend, the Purdue men's golf team pieced together a strong day to win both of its matches on Day 2 of the Big Ten Match Play Championships on Saturday at the Hammock Beach Resort.
The Boilermakers won both of their matches by identical 4-2-0 scores. In the morning round, Purdue defeated a strong Northwestern squad, 4-2-0, before defeating Wisconsin, 4-2-0, in the afternoon session.
Purdue finished the event with a 2-0-2 record and is now 14-4-4 in the Big Ten Match Play Championships under head coach Rob Bradley. During the last two years, Purdue is 5-0-3 in the event.
Freshman Andrew Lewis and sophomore Joe Weiler won both of their matches Saturday. Lewis was especially impressive, winning 2-and-1 in the match against Northwestern and 3-and-2 against Wisconsin. Weiler won both of his matches by a 1-up score.
Cole Bradley, Timmy Hildebrand, Jarle Volden and Jason Hong also posted victories during the day.
Lewis led Purdue during the weekend, finishing with a 3-0-1 record, while Bradley went 3-1-0. Hildebrand, Volden and Weiler each registered two victories in the event.
Purdue will compete next in the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, beginning Sunday, Feb. 17. The field is typically one of the most competitive in the country every spring.
