AUSTIN, Texas
– Purdue pitchers retired 23 of the final 25 batters they faced, but that successful stretch came after No. 14 Texas had already scored three times in the first inning, an early rally that handed the Longhorns a 3-0 victory in Sunday's series finale.

Texas (6-2) took three of four in the series. With the Boilermakers (1-6) winning in shutout fashion in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, there were runs scored in only two of the final 35 half innings played in the series. Purdue scored four times in the ninth inning Saturday evening and the Longhorns opened Sunday's game with the three-run frame.

Patrick J. Smith (0-1) worked six innings of three-run ball in his first start as a Boilermaker. The quality start was the longest outing by a Purdue pitcher this season. He issued only one walk after the Boilermakers had walked 22 batters over the first three games of the series and 41 over the first six games of the season.

Texas opened the game with consecutive bunt singles. Eric Kennedy was originally called out at first base on the second of the two bunts, but the call was reversed after a video review. Austin Todd followed with an RBI single to left field and DJ Petrinsky later doubled home two more runners with an opposite-field gapper into right center.

The Longhorns' lone hit the rest of the game was a two-out single in the fourth inning. That was also UT's final base runner. Smith retired the final seven batters he faced. Matt Moore struck out four of the five batters he faced and Conner Tomasic fanned Todd to end the eighth inning.

Purdue brought the tying run to the plate in the fourth and eighth innings, but only had one runner advance past second base on the day. Matt Whelan (1-0) retired 15 of the 19 batters he faced over five-plus innings, pitching over a leadoff hit by pitch twice. He needed only three pitches to retire the Boilermakers' 4-5-6 hitters in the fourth inning after Owen Jansen (HBP) and Ben Nisle (single) reached safely to open the frame.

Kamron Fields induced a 4-6-3 double play vs. the first batter he faced and went on to work three innings of hitless relief. He struck out the side in the eighth inning, working around a walk and another hit by pitch of Jansen.

Cole McKenzie made a pair of fine running catches while making his first start in center field. Nisle also robbed Zach Zubia of a double with a diving catch in left center to end the fifth inning.

Coach Waz was disappointed about losing the series at No. 14 Texas, but was proud of the effort & attitude of his guys. #Purdue played well defensively all weekend & the pitching really shined over the final 2 games in Austin. #BoilerUp pic.twitter.com/bsWpJfXbPW

Third baseman Ryan Reynolds made the key defensive play for Texas, a running catch in foul territory with his back to home plate. He snared a foul pop off the bat of Zac Fascia with Jansen and Nisle aboard.

Purdue was charged with only two errors in the series, highlighted by a perfect weekend for the infielders.

Nisle (6-for-16) hit safely in all four games of the series and is riding a six-game hit streak. Fascia has also reached base safely in all six games in which he has batted this year.

The Boilermakers visit Oral Roberts for weekend No. 3 of the season. It's another four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader. Purdue won the first-ever meeting between the two schools on May 15 of last season at Alexander Field. The series opener in Tulsa is set for Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
