MADIERA BEACH, Fla. – Senior Mallory Baker and freshman Nicole Siess each plated a home run guiding Purdue to a 5-2 victory over Georgetown in the Madeira Beach College Invitational finale on Sunday.
With the win, Purdue concluded the weekend 4-1 and improved to 7-5 overall.
Senior Lexi Huffman gave the Boilermakers an early lead in the opening frame with an RBI single to left field following a single up the middle and a double to left field from freshman Rachel Becker and senior Jenny Behan, respectively. Junior Madison Douglass kept the momentum going with a two RBI single to center field, driving in pinch runner Shyanne Sheffield and Behan.
A home run from Baker cushioned Purdue's lead in the second, but an RBI single down the right field line in the third from Hoya Sarah Bennett cut the Boilermaker edge back to three.
Siess added to the Purdue advantage with her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the fourth, while Georgetown collected its last run of the game on an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.
Neither team found any more opportunities to score in the final two innings, solidifying the 5-2 Purdue win.
Freshman Alex Echazarreta (2-1) earned the win after giving up only two runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out one in a complete game effort. The victory marked the rookie's second start and third appearance of the weekend.
In the weekend finale, the Boilermakers registered eight hits and a pair of miscues, with Becker going 3-for-4 with three singles and one run scored.
Up next, Purdue will look to keep shining in Florida at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic II in Orlando, next weekend. In the classic, the Boilermakers are set to challenge Bradley, South Alabama and Savannah State.
