MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Boilermaker softball team split its games on the second day of the Madeira Beach College Invitational, earning a 10-8 win over Albany that saw senior Mallory Baker hit a grand slam, before falling to South Dakota 4-2 on Saturday.
Purdue moves to 6-5 on the season as its win streak is halted at three games.
Purdue 10, Albany 8
The Great Danes (1-3) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with a two-run home run from Maranda Jimenez in the top of the second, before Purdue grabbed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Boilermaker runs came on a two RBI double from sophomore Lianna Mullins and an RBI single from junior Alexa Binckes.
The Boilermakers added to their edge with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from senior Mallory Baker. The multi-RBI home run marked Purdue's second grand slam of the weekend.
The Great Danes would get two back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double and an RBI grounder to the shortstop, before Purdue answered back in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run from senior Lexi Huffman.
Albany tried to rally itself with four runs in the top of the seventh, but a cleanly fielded groundout by freshman Rachel Becker sealed the 10-8 victory.
Freshman Breanna Smith (2-1) earned her second career win as she allowed two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings, while redshirt sophomore Sydney Bates and senior Maddie Damon combined for 3.1 innings of relief. Senior Kaitlynn Moody closed out the contest with 1.2 innings pitched and her first save of the season as she did not relinquish a single hit to the Great Danes.
The Boilermakers collected 10 hits, but had two miscues in the contest. Freshman Rylee Platusic paced the squad at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, while Baker, Mullins, Huffman, Binckes and junior Madison Douglass each tallied at least one RBI in the win.
USD 4, Purdue 2
After two quiet innings, the Boilermakers struck first with runs in the second and fifth innings as senior Jenny Behan registered a pair of RBI sac flies to center field.
The Coyotes (10-3) answered back with a pair of scores on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. USD's first run came on an RBI single from Jaime Holscher, while the second run was collected on a passed ball.
With the score tied 2-2 heading into the seventh, Holscher once again proved affective for USD as she delivered a two-run home run over the right center field fence for the Coyote victory.
Purdue put together six hits in the game, but committed three errors, while USD also totaled six hits and one miscue. Freshman Rachel Becker led the offense, going 2-for-3, while Behan registered both of Purdue's RBI.
