AUSTIN, Texas – Purdue baseball surrendered just one extra-base but also issued 10 walks, with six of those runners coming around to score in 7-2 series-opening loss at No. 14 Texas on Friday.
The Boilermakers (0-4) finished the night with a 9-8 edge in the hit column after recording three straight singles in the ninth inning. But the Longhorns (4-1) led the entire night thanks to a two-out, two-run single from Ryan Reynolds in the bottom of the first.
Johnny Sage doubled home Purdue's first run in the fourth inning and reached base safely three times. He also made the top defensive play of the night, a catch up against the wall in right field with two men aboard in the first inning. He still managed to catch the towering fly ball off the bat of Zach Zubia despite making contact with the wall before he caught the ball.
Ben Nisle and Zac Fascia also had a pair of hits for the Boilermakers. Fascia has two hits in all three games he has started this season. Justin Fugitt and Ryan Howe recorded their first collegiate hits back-to-back in the ninth inning to help Purdue score a run.
Dalton Parker (0-1) walked a career-high six over 3 2/3 innings of two-run ball. But the only hit of significance he surrendered was Reynolds' two-run single in the first. Trent Johnson retired UT's No. 3 hitter with a pair of runners aboard in the bottom of the fourth to finish off a third straight scoreless inning for Purdue pitching.
But after striking out the No. 4 and 5 hitters top open the following frame, Texas' 7-8-9 hitters strung together three consecutive singles against Johnson after a walk kept the inning alive. Michael McCann delivered a two-out RBI single to extend the Longhorns' lead to 3-1. The Boilermakers were also unable to retire nine-hole hitter Bryce Reagan on the night (2-for-2, 2 walks).
Austin Todd's two-out, two-run triple broke the game open in the seventh inning, punishing Purdue for three walks in the frame.
Kyle Wade worked the Boilermakers' lone 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the eighth.
Texas starter Bryce Elder (1-0) retired seven of the final nine batters he faced, working six innings of six-hit ball in his second quality start of the season. He struck out six and induced eight ground ball outs.
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. ET. The entire series is being televised live by the Longhorn Network.
