BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Taite Kitchel eclipsed Purdue's program record in the 100 butterfly on Friday of the Big Ten Championships.
Kitchel is now the fastest Boilermaker ever in both butterfly events. She posted a time of 52.66 in the prelims to qualify for the A final, eclipsing Kylie Vogel's benchmark (52.85) from 2015.
Fellow senior Jackie Smailis broke 53 seconds in the 100 backstroke for the second time this week, registering a time of 52.85 in the prelims. Her career-best mark ranks second in program history, just four hundredths shy of Allie Smith's program record that has stood since 2011. Smailis was also an A finalist Friday.
Natalie Myers (4:16.88 in 400 IM), Cassidy Sampson (54.45 in 100 back), Riley Kishman (1:01.19 in 100 breast), Maizie Seidl (1:46.64 in 200 free) and Breanna Robinson (54.15 in 100 fly) also posted career-best times to move up among Purdue's all-time top 10. Jinq En Phee (100 breast), Kishman and Seidl were all B finalists. Myers and Robinson also scored in C finals.
Purdue's top scoring individual event Friday was 3-meter diving (34 points) after Morgan Meixner, Emily Meaney and Maggie Merriman all finished among the top 18. Meixner and Meaney both qualified for the consolation final.
The Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 6:30 p.m.
