Senior Grady Eifert provided two of them Saturday, and they were the difference as No. 15 Purdue men's basketball edged Nebraska 75-72 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Both were baskets with one second on the shot clock - the first a layup on an underneath inbounds pass from Ryan Cline with 3:39 left and the second a desperation flip following a shot by Carsen Edwards that was blocked with 1:57 remaining.
The second gave the Boilermakers (20-7, 13-3) a 64-61 lead, and they were 11 of 13 from the free throw line the rest of the way to move into a first-place tie in the Big Ten Conference with Michigan and Michigan State.
The Wolverines host the Spartans on Sunday in Ann Arbor, and the two teams meet again March 9 in East Lansing.
With the victory, Purdue reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth straight season and for the 11th time in 14 seasons under head coach Matt Painter. In six of those seasons, the Boilermakers have won 13 or more Big Ten games.?
The first half featured 11 lead changes, the last coming when Cline drilled a 3-pointer with two seconds to go, giving Purdue a 38-36 advantage at intermission.
Purdue's biggest lead of the game was seven points at 74-67 with 13 seconds remaining.
Matt Haarms, who won the game at Indiana on Tuesday, led the Boilermakers with 17 points (two shy of his career best) and a career-high nine rebounds. He was 5 of 9 from the field and 7 of 7 from the line and also had four blocked shots before fouling out in the final moments.
Cline and Edwards both scored 13 points, with Cline also contributing five rebounds and five assists. Edwards made merely 3 of 16 shots, including just 1 of 10 from 3-point range.
The Boilermakers overcame 37.7 percent field-goal shooting by draining 23 of 26 free throws (88.5 percent). They dominated the boards by a 48-30 margin, including 19 offensive rebounds.
Nebraska's Glynn Watson Jr. led all players with 25 points. The Cornhuskers (15-13, 5-12) have lost nine of their last 11 games.
Purdue hosts Illinois (10-17, 6-10) on Wednesday at Mackey Arena. The game is sold out and will be televised by BTN beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET. Because of the blizzard warning for eastern Nebraska, the Boilermakers will not return to campus until Sunday.
