BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
– Emily Bretscher and Morgan Meixner teamed up to give Purdue two of the top seven finishers in 1-meter diving and the same quartet of Boilermakers joined forces to eclipse another medley relay record, highlighting Thursday at the Big Ten Championships for Purdue women's swimming & diving.

Bretscher placed fourth and Meixner seventh in the 1-meter championship final. After Emily Meaney also scored in the consolation final, the trio accounted for 51 team points in the event. That helped keep Purdue in sixth place in the team scoring.

For the second night in a row, Jackie Smailis, Jinq En Phee, Taite Kitchel and Danielle Auckley teamed up to establish a program record in a medley relay. Their time of 3:34.21 was an NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut). It marked the second year in a row and third time in four years a new 400 medley relay mark has been set at Big Tens.

Smailis led off the race with a 100 backstroke split of 52.98, improving on her second-fastest time in program history while joining Allie Smith as the only Boilermakers to break 53 seconds in the event.

Natalie Myers and Maizie Seidl also posted career-best times. Myers became the sixth Boilermaker to break two minutes in the 200 IM, scoring in the C final with a B Cut time of 1:59.83. In the 500 freestyle, Seidl improved on her prelim time by two seconds, moving into eighth place in program history with a B cut of 4:46.77. She also scored in the C final.

Before contributing to the record-setting relay, Auckley and Smailis scored in the C final of the 50 free. Auckley matched her season-best time (23.00) in the prelims. Fellow senior Emily Meckstroth also scored in the C final of the 500 free, posting a personal season-best time of 4:49.02 in the prelims.

Smailis, Phee and Kitchel were also part of the 400 medley relay team last year at Big Tens. Time drops on the splits posted by Smailis (53.89 in 2018, 52.98 in 2019) and Kitchel (53.15 in 2018, 52.46 in 2019) were a big reason why the Boilermakers eclipsed last season's benchmark (3:34.72) by half a second.

Meixner was a championship finalist in a springboard event at Big Tens for the third year in a row. She remains Purdue's active career scoring leader at Big Tens (138 points).

Bretscher improved on her prelim score by 30.85 points in the final. Her list score of 327.85 was only 1.47 points shy of her career best from earlier this season.

The Big Ten Championships continue Friday with prelims at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 6:30 p.m.
