WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Eight members of Purdue men's swimming are scheduled to race at home for the final time this season, competing against swimmers from Indiana and the University of Indianapolis for the annual First Chance meet.
It will be an invitational-style format but feature more of a time trial focus, with morning preliminaries and afternoon finals both days. Action is set for noon ET and 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday. Only individual events are being contested.
Representing the Boilermakers will be Jake Heidecker, Ryan Hrosik, Kaleb Gould, Luke Ingram, Jason Jung, Brady Robinson, Dale Williams and Eddy Zawatski.
The final two spots on Purdue's travel roster for next week's Big Ten Championships will go to the swimmers with the times most likely to score points in an individual event at Big Tens. Coaches Dan Ross and Brian Barnes have a matrix they utilize to determine those scoring probabilities.
An additional roster spot at Big Tens became available after diver Steele Johnson required another surgery on his injured foot earlier this month. Johnson will not compete this season, but would have an additional year of college eligibility should he choose to utilize it during the 2019-20 school year. The 2016 Olympic silver medalist could also opt to focus on training for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
This is the fourth season of an Indiana-Purdue collaboration for an in-state first chance meet, which is open to any schools around the Midwest that wish to attend. The Boilermakers are hosting for the second year in a row because the Women's Big Ten Championships is being held at IU's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center this week. The Hoosiers are in line to host both the First Chance meet and the Men's Big Ten Championships next year.
A year ago, Gabi Gomez Treig and Ryan Lawrence earned the final two spots on Purdue's travel roster for Big Tens based in part by their performances the First Chance meet. They accounted for the top two times on the team this season in both the 50 and 100 free. Gomez Treig ended up cracking Purdue's all-time top 15 with his times in the 50 free (20.05) and 100 butterfly (48.27) at Big Tens. Lawrence has become a key contributor to Purdue's freestyle relays this season.
In 2017, Tim Barth (backstroke) and Will Schrensky (breaststroke) earned the final berths on the Big Ten roster via their season-best times at the first chance meet, which was held in Bloomington.
Iowa is hosting the Men's Big Ten Championships this year for third time (2012, 2015) since it's new aquatic center opened in 2010. The Boilermakers will depart Tuesday for Iowa City and the meet is set for Feb. 27 to March 2.
