BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Matt Haarms got the final word.
The sophomore center's lengthy tip in with 3.2 seconds remaining enabled No. 15 Purdue men's basketball to escape Assembly Hall with a 48-46 win over Indiana on Tuesday.
Harms, who played just 22 minutes while saddled with foul trouble, was verbally battered much of the game by the Hoosier crowd.
Points were at a premium in the knockdown, drag-out affair. The 94 combined points marked the fewest in the series since Indiana won 49-39 on Jan. 21, 1950, at Lambert Fieldhouse in West Lafayette.
Purdue shot 32 percent (19 of 60); Indiana 27 percent (15 of 55).
The Hoosiers led 45-41 with 2:32 to play when Ryan Cline drained a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game. Indiana subsequently committed a turnover, and after a Purdue timeout Carsen Edwards drove the lane and scored to give put the Boilermakers ahead with 38 seconds remaining.
Romeo Lankford made one of two free throws with 23 seconds to go, leading to Haarms' heroics following a missed shot by Edwards. Purdue held Indiana without a field goal for the final 3:48.
Cline was the only Boilermaker to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Edwards mustered nine points on 4 of 24 shooting, including 0 of 10 from 3-point range.
With the win, the Boilermakers (19-7, 12-3) pulled even with Michigan and Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten Conference with five games remaining. Purdue also picked up another half point in the Governor's Cup competition and now leads 6.5 to 3.0.
The Boilermakers have won three straight games at Assembly Hall (a program first), five in a row against the Hoosiers and eight of the last nine between the intrastate rivals.
Indiana (13-13, 4-11), which lost for the 11th time in 12 games, committed 17 turnovers to offset its 47-38 rebounding advantage.
The score was 20-apiece at halftime.
The Boilermakers play at Nebraska (15-12, 5-11) on Saturday. The Cornhuskers lost at Penn State 95-71 on Tuesday.
