EVANSTON, Ill. – Three victories in freestyle events coupled with another win in the diving well Saturday capped the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals on a high note for Purdue swimming & diving.
The Boilermakers were victorious in men's 3-meter diving, 500 free and 200 free relay as well as the women's 100 free, finishing the weekend with 10 total event winners.
The Purdue men and women both earned a split in the team scoring, topping Northwestern but coming up short vs. Minnesota. The Boilermakers finished their dual meet seasons with a pair of 3-4 records. The women posted a true road win vs. a Northwestern team ranked 23rd in the latest coaches poll.
Saturday winners included Danielle Auckley (100 free), Ben Bramley (3-meter) and Nick McDowell (500 free). Nikola Bjelajac, Nikola Acin, Ryan Lawrence and James Boone also teamed up to win the 200 free relay to begin Saturday's session.
McDowell was victorious in the 500 free at the Big Ten Triple Duals for the second year in a row. His fifth individual event victory of the season gave him a share of the team lead. He was also the runner-up in the 1,000 free Friday.
Bramley led the way with his second victory of the season as the Boilermakers impressed in another men's diving event. They had at least three of the top five finishers for the second day in a row. Greg Duncan (4th) and Brandon Loschiavo (5th) joined Bramley as those to be top five in both springboard events.
The Purdue women accomplished a similar feat with three of the top five in both the 100 and 200 free. Megan Johnson was part of both trios. Auckley posted her fourth individual event victory of the season by winning the 100.
Along with helping Purdue win the 200 free relay, Acin was also the team's top finisher in the 50, 100 and 200 free this weekend. He added a runner-up finish in the 100 free Saturday to his second-place finish in the 50 Friday.
Other runner-up finishes Saturday included Taite Kitchel (100 fly), Maizie Seidl (500 free), Brett Riley (400 IM) and Joe Young (100 fly). Kitchel (200 fly) and Young (100 back) both won events Friday. Kitchel joined Acin with top finishes in three individual events.
Purdue's teams in both the 200 and 400 free relays Saturday accounted for personal season-bests as quartets. Those foursomes finished no worse than second place in any of the four races. The Purdue women closed the meet with a 2-3 showing in the 400 free relay.
A large majority of the Boilermakers that competed this weekend will now set their sights on the Big Ten Championships later this month in Bloomington (women's, Feb. 20-23) and Iowa City (men's, Feb. 27-March 2). But selected swimmers will race at the Ohio State Winter Invite (Feb. 16-17) and the First Chance Meet vs. Indiana (Feb. 23-24) prior to Big Tens.
