EVANSTON, Ill. – Event victories for six Boilermakers coupled with dominant showings in men's 1-meter diving and the women's 200 butterfly highlighted the opening night of the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals for Purdue swimming & diving.

The Boilermakers lead Northwestern but trail Minnesota in the head-to-head team scoring. Saturday's schedule features nine more events, with action beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

Headlined by victories from Brandon Loschiavo and Taite Kitchel, Purdue excelled in 1-meter diving and the 200 fly. The Purdue had four of the top five finishers on 1-meter after Loschiavo, Joe Cifelli and Greg Duncan swept the 1-2-3 spots. Kitchel and Evan King teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the 200 fly.

Senior Joe Young was victorious at the Big Ten Triple Duals for the third year in a row, repeating in the 100 backstroke after also winning the 200 back as a sophomore. Erik Juliusson (200 IM) and Kitchel were also victorious at the meet for the second year in a row.

Emily Meckstroth won the 1,000 freestyle with a Purdue season-best time of 10:12.13. Emily Bretscher was victorious in 3-meter diving, her fifth win of the season to match Kitchel for the team lead. Young also leads the men with five individual event victories.

Loschiavo's victory on 1-meter was his fourth event win this season, but first on a springboard since a 3-meter victory in his collegiate debut, an October 2016 dual vs. Miami (Ohio).

Freshman Nikola Acin (50 free, 200 free) joined Kitchel (200 fly, 200 IM) as Purdue's top finisher in multiple events. Acin (50 free) was one of five Boilermakers to finish as the runner-up in an individual event. Jinq En Phee (100 breast), Grant Lewis (200 fly), Nick McDowell (1,000 free) and Cifelli did likewise. Purdue also took second in the men's 200 medley relay and women's 800 free relay.

Acin and Nikola Bjelajac finished 2-3 in the 50 free behind Minnesota's Bowen Becker, who won with an NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut) of 19.83. Phee took second in the 100 breast behind a pool-record time of 1:00.68 by Minnesota's Lindsey Kozelsky.

The Purdue women had three of the top five finishers in the 200 free and 200 fly. Those races coupled with men's 1-meter diving highlighted the nine events in which the Boilermakers had multiple top-five finishers.
