RIO GRANDE, P.R. The Purdue men's golf team pieced together its strongest round of the tournament, moving up one spot to fifth after the final round of the elite Puerto Rico Classic.

The Boilermakers recorded their third-best round of the season with an 8-under par 280 to finish the tournament at 5-under par 859 (293-286-280). Purdue finishes 11 shots behind co-champions Georgia and Georgia Tech (-16), while No. 13 Oklahoma was third at 12-under par and No. 28-ranked North Carolina State was fourth at 8-under par.

The Boilermakers finished ahead of No. 12-ranked Clemson (-1), No. 31-ranked Marquette (+10) and No. 40-ranked Iowa (+7).

Purdue entered the week ranked 66th in the latest Golfstat team rankings, but the finish should move the Boilermakers up the rankings.
It marked the first time in 21 years that Purdue has competed in the event that the Boilermakers have finished in the top five in back-to-back seasons. Purdue finished third a year ago.

Senior Timmy Hildebrand led the Boilermakers with a T-15th showing at 2-under par 214 (70-75-69). At even par through 14 holes today, Hildebrand birdied three of his last four holes to move into the top-20 for the sixth time in seven events this season.

Senior Jarle Volden overcame a tough first round to finish T-21st at 1-under par 215 (77-70-68). Volden birdied six of his first nine holes during the round and then recorded a birdie on his final hole to record a final-round 68.

Sophomore Cole Bradley finished tied for 23rd at even-par 216 (70-69-77) after strong performances in the first two rounds.

Freshman Andrew Lewis finished tied for 43rd at 5-over par 221 (76-73-72) while sophomore Joe Weiler was 49th at 6-over par 216 (77-74-71).

The Boilermakers will be back in action at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw, S.C., on March 24-26.
