RIO GRANDE, P.R. The Purdue men's golf team started slow, but finished strong in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic on the River Course of the Rio Mar Resort.

The Boilermakers are in seventh place after day one of the 54-hole tournament, shooting an opening-round score of 5-over par 293. No. 28-ranked North Carolina State leads a strong field at 8-under par and is followed by No. 21-ranked Georgia (-6), No. 4-ranked Georgia Tech (-5), Ohio State (-3), No. 13 Oklahoma (-1) and No. 12 Clemson (+1).

Purdue is seventh and currently ahead of No. 9 Alabama, No. 31 Marquette and No. 40 Iowa.

The Boilermakers, who started on holes 16 to 18, scuffled in their opening nine of the first competitive event of the spring, being a combined 16-over par and in last place after 10-12 holes before making the turn to the back nine. However, the Boilermakers righted the ship and played the remaining holes in 6-under par to surge into seventh.

Leading the Boilermakers was senior Timmy Hildebrand and sophomore Cole Bradley, both shooting a 2-under par 70 to finish round one tied for sixth. Hildebrand was 3-over par through six holes and was still 2-over par through 13 holes, before he birdied four of his last five holes to move into the top 10.

Bradley was consistent all day, registering four birdies, 12 pars and two bogeys on his round.

Andrew Lewis shot an opening-round 76, while Joe Weiler and Jarle Volden tallied 5-over par 77s.

Purdue will be paired with Georgia Tech and Alabama in round two.
