COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 12 Purdue men's basketball saw two winning streaks come to an end Tuesday with a 70-56 loss at No. 24 Maryland, but the Boilermakers still are looking good in the Big Ten Conference standings.
The Terrapins snapped Purdue's eight-game overall winning streak and three-game road surge while breaking their own five-game skid to the Boilermakers.
With seven games remaining - all but one against teams with losing conference records - the Boilermakers (17-7, 10-3) are tied atop the Big Ten with Michigan (11-3) and Michigan State (11-3) on the loss side. Michigan lost at Penn State and Michigan State won at Wisconsin on Tuesday.
Following a Carsen Edwards steal and dunk with three and a half minutes left in the first half, the Boilermakers led 32-21 at the XFinity Center. Maryland pared the deficit to 38-30 at halftime.
The second half was all Maryland, to the tune of a 40-18 margin. The Boilermakers made just 6 of 36 field goal attempts after intermission, a trifling 17.6 percent.
Edwards paced Purdue with 24 points on 8 of 27 shooting from the field, including 3 of 13 from 3-point range, and 5 of 8 from the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds and two steals.
No other Boilermaker scored in double figures. Ryan Cline had nine points.
Purdue shot 28.2 percent from the field, including 21.1 percent from 3-point range, and was 9 of 14 from the line (64.3 percent). The Boilermakers had merely five assists but committed only four turnovers.
Five Terrapins scored in double figures, led by Jalen Smith with 16 points. His dunk with 10:13 remaining gave Maryland (19-6, 10-4) its first lead at 50-48.
The Boilermakers host Penn State on Saturday at Mackey Arena. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. ET. The game is sold out and will be televised by BTN. The first 2,000 fans receive an E'Twaun Moore bobblehead.
