The Boilermakers (15-6, 8-2) extended their winning streak to six games and have won nine of their last 10 contests since idling with a 6-5 record in mid-December. At the halfway point of the conference season, Purdue resides in third place in the Big Ten, merely one game behind co-leaders Michigan and Michigan State (9-1).
Penn State (7-14, 0-10), which lost its eighth in a row, took its only lead of the game with just under a minute remaining at 85-83. After Carsen Edwards missed a 3-pointer and the Nittany Lions committed a turnover, Edwards forced overtime with a layup with 5.2 seconds to play.
It was all Purdue over the extra five minutes. Edwards converted a four-point play, sandwiched between two baskets by Trevion Williams, and Nojel Eastern continued his torrid free throw shooting, going 6-for-6 from the line.
After losing its first four road games of the season, Purdue has won three in a row. The Boilermakers have won six straight at Penn State, the last three in overtime.
Edwards, who finished with 38 points, including a career-high eight 3-pointers, scored 17 points over the first eight and half minutes and helped the Boilermakers surge to a 37-20 lead with 8:15 left in the first half. But Penn State refused to fold, clawing its way back to within six at 50-44 at halftime. The Lions could have been closer had it not been for a buzzer-beating 30-foot bank shot by Aaron Wheeler.
Edwards reached the 30-point plateau for the fifth time this season and for the seventh time in his career.
He got help from Ryan Cline, who scored 20 points, draining 6 of 7 from 3-point range, including several big ones down the stretch in regulation. Williams had 10 points, while Eastern added eight to go with 10 rebounds.
The Boilermakers made a season-high 16 3-pointers and shot 55.2 percent from long range. They were 16 of 29 on both 2-point and 3-point attempts and 19 of 21 from the free throw line (90.5 percent).
Penn State made it a game by hitting 3-pointers itself (12 of 29) and going 30 of 41 from the free throw line. The Lions outrebounded Purdue 41-32.
Lamar Stevens paced Penn State with 24 points.
Next for the Boilermakers is a home date with Minnesota (16-5, 6-4) on Sunday. Tipoff is set for noon ET. The game is sold out and will be televised by BTN. The Golden Gophers have won back-to-back games and three out to four to climb out of a hole and into sixth place in the Big Ten.?
