Women's Tennis Edged by No. 24 Syracuse

<br /><br />Purdue and Syracuse had a hard-fought match that came down to the very end, with the Orange winning 4-3.

OXFORD, Miss. - The Purdue women's tennis team knew it was in for a challenging two days at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. No matter the draw, the Boilermakers would play two top-25 opponents. After defeating No. 12 Ole Miss 4-3 on its home turf Saturday, Purdue turned its attention to No. 24 Syracuse on Sunday. A hard-fought match came down to the very end, with the Orange winning 4-3.

The afternoon began on a high note for the Boilermakers in doubles play. The European package of Ena Baic and Zala Dovnik finished first, defeating Guzal Yusupova and Dina Hegab 6-2. Silvia Ambrosio and  Amina Mukhametshina then secured the doubles point with a win over Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez 7-5.

Singles play went back and forth between the Boilermakers and the Orange. The final result came down to the third set in the last dual.

Caitlin Calkins put the Boilermakers up 2-1 with her victory over Sofya Treshcheva 6-3, 6-2.

Syracuse secured the next two points, for a 3-2 advantage with two matches remaining.

Ambrosio was playing No. 43 Gabriela Knutson, while Alex Sabe played Dina Hegab. Both matches went  down to the third set. Ambrosio defeated Knutson 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. The win tied up the team score at 3-apiece before Sabe fell to Hegab 1-6, 6-4, 4-6.

The Boilermakers (3-1) are back in action Feb. 1 at Virginia Tech. The match will begin at 3 p.m. ET.
