WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Event victories by four of the Boilermakers' seniors highlighted Purdue swimming & diving's Senior Day defeats against nationally ranked Indiana.
The Purdue women were victorious in the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 3-meter diving. Seniors Jackie Smailis (100 back), Taite Kitchel (200 fly) and Morgan Meixner (3-meter) joined Maizie Seidl (200 free) as event winners. Kitchel and Seidl both posted their fourth individual event victories of the season to grab a share of the team lead.
On the men's side, Brandon Loschiavo was victorious in platform diving for the third time this season. In the fall, he also won the event among elite fields at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational. Senior Joe Cifelli was victorious in 3-meter diving, which was contested as a non-scoring exhibition Saturday with platform also featured in the dual.
Smailis and Tessa Wrightson teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the 100 back. Smailis nearly swept the backstroke events, but was out touched by IU's Bailey Kovac by .13 hundredths of a second in the 200.
The women's 200 free and 200 fly as well as the men's 500 free also featured very tight finishes. Seidl won the 200 free by .17 hundredths of a second and Kitchel was victorious in the 200 fly by .14 hundredths. Nick McDowell was out touched by IU's Michael Brinegar by .23 hundredths in the men's 500.
Danielle Auckley (50 and 100 free) and Jinq En Phee (100 and 200 breast) joined Kitchel (100 and 200 fly, 400 IM), McDowell (500 and 1,000 free), Seidl (200 and 500 free) and Smailis as Boilermakers to be Purdue's top finishers in multiple events.
Emily Meaney posted a Purdue season-best score of 255.98 while competing from the tower for the first time this season, finishing as the runner-up to Olympian Jessica Parratto. Emily Bretscher, Meixner and Meaney also teamed up for a 2-3-4 finish behind Parratto on 1-meter.
Phee (1:01.86) was just .02 hundredths of a second shy of recording another NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut) in the 100 breaststroke, finishing third in an event won by Olympic gold medalist Lilly King (1:01.12). King and Phee were both championship finalists in the event at the NCAA Championships last year.
Both of the Purdue men's top-finishing relay teams accounted for season-best times for those quartets. Ryan Lawrence raced as part of both A relays and was the Boilermakers' top finisher in the 50 free. Joe Young (100 back), Trent Pellini (100 breast), Erik Juliusson (100 fly) and Nikola Acin (100 free) also contributed to a runner-up finish in a relay while being the team's top finisher in an individual event.
The Indiana men won their 29th consecutive dual meet dating back to January 2016.
Purdue is back in action next weekend for the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals. The Boilermakers will compete against Minnesota and Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. Sessions are set for 6 p.m. ET on Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
