COLUMBUS, Ohio - Value City Arena has not been kind to the Purdue men's basketball team.
But the Boilermakers won their second straight game there Wednesday, defeating Ohio State 79-67. Purdue now is 3-13 all-time in the facility since it opened in 1998.
The Boilermakers (13-6, 6-2) overcame their own slow first-half start and an Ohio State second-half blitz to win their fourth straight game and remain in fourth place in the Big Ten Conference.
Trailing 17-8 nine minutes into the game, Purdue outscored the Buckeyes 31-12 the remainder of the first half to take a 39-29 advantage.
Buoyed by 3-point shooting, Ohio State cut the deficit to two at 58-56 midway through the second half. The Buckeyes still had a chance down 67-63 with just over six minutes remaining, but a 3-pointer by Ryan Cline, playing his final game at his father's alma mater, proved to be the dagger as Purdue went up 72-63 with four minutes to go.
Carsen Edwards led all players with 27 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and a career-high-tying five steals. Along the way, he became merely the fourth Purdue player to reach 1,500 career points as a junior, following Rick Mount, Russell Cross and Glenn Robinson. Edwards also moved into fifth place on the Boilermakers' career 3-point field goals list.
Cline (13) and Trevion Williams (10) also scored in double figures, while Grady Eifert and Matt Haarms both tallied nine points.
Both teams shot well overall - Purdue 47.9 percent and Ohio State 52.3 percent - and from 3-point range - Purdue 50 percent (12 of 24) and Ohio State 45.5 percent (10 of 22). The Boilermakers were 21 of 25 from the free throw line, compared with 11 of 16 for the Buckeyes, and won the rebounding battle by a 28-23 margin.
Ohio State (12-6, 2-5) dropped its fifth straight game, all in Big Ten play.
Purdue has won four of the last six meetings overall against Ohio State, closing the Buckeyes' lead in the all-time series to 90-87. Ohio State is the only Big Ten team with a winning record against the Boilermakers.
Purdue is back in action Sunday at Mackey Arena, hosting No. 6 Michigan State at 1 p.m. ET. The Spartans (17-2, 8-0) are the lone undefeated Big Ten team in conference play heading into their road game at Iowa on Thursday.
