<br /><br />The Purdue women's tennis team opened its season Saturday with wins over DePaul (5-2) and Butler (4-0).

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team opened its season Saturday on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center and came away with wins over DePaul (5-2) and Butler (4-0).

Against DePaul, the strong start began in doubles. Purdue's two seniors, Silvia Ambrosio and Amina Mukhametshina, paired up to defeat Keisha Clousing and Lenka Antonijevic 6-3. Zala Dovnik and Ena Babic secured the doubles point by defeating Aspasia Avgeri and Malica Tesic 6-4.

Singles brought four more victories over the Blue Demons: Ambrosio over Clousing 4-6, 7-5, 6-3; Seira Shimizu over Marija Jovicic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Mukhametshina over Maddie Yergler 6-1, 6-3; and Caitlin Calkins over Tesic 6-3, 7-5.

The second match of the day against Butler brought more success for the Boilermakers.

In doubles, Purdue won all three matches 6-0: Ambrosio and Mukhametshina over Emily Neal and Sara Linn, Calkins and Shimizu over Carolina McAuley and Sarah Monesmith, and Babic and Dovnik over Carla O'Byrne and Kendal Wilby.

The Boilermakers cinched the victory with three singles wins. Mukhametshina beat Nina Bertino 6-1, 6-1, while Calkins downed Lauren Marx 6-0, 6-0 and Dovnik topped O'Byrne 6-1, 6-0.

Purdue returns to action Jan. 26 at Ole Miss.
