WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sixty-nine fall sport Boilermakers were recognized as Academic All-Big Ten honorees, announced by the conference office Wednesday. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be members of a 2018-19 fall sport, be enrolled full-time for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
This year's honorees mark the most by Purdue fall sports since 2014, when there were 71.
Football leads the way with 29 Academic All-Big Ten accolades, followed by women's soccer with 16, women's cross country with 12 and men's cross country and women's volleyball with six apiece.
Among those recognized were three student-athletes with a 4.0 grade-point average: soccer's Hannah Melchiorre, along with women's cross country's Rachel Anderson and Megan Slamkowski.
In addition to being eligible for its second straight bowl game under the helm of Jeff Brohm, the Purdue football program celebrates the most Academic All-Big Ten honorees in its history. The Boilermakers, who boast one of the most dynamic offenses in the conference, features five student-athletes that lead the way both on the field and in the classroom with dual academic and All-Big Ten recognition.
The volleyball team is led by three-time Academic All-Big Ten award recipient Blake Mohler and two-time honoree Olivia Van Zelst. The Boilermakers concluded their season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where Mohler led the Boilermakers with a match-best .625 hitting percentage against No. 10 Kentucky.
Among the six men's cross country academic honorees was Great Lakes Region Men's Athlete of the Year Jaret Carpenter. He closed out his junior campaign with a first-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional. The Wayzata, Minnesota, native helped lead the men's cross country program to its best season in 33 years after advancing to the NCAA Championships.
In addition to a Purdue-leading duo with a perfect GPA, the women's cross country team returns seven Academic All-Big Ten recipients from a year ago. Purdue joins Michigan State and Minnesota as the only women's cross country programs to produce two runners with 4.0's.
The women's soccer team produced the most honorees since the 2014 season, with 73 percent of its eligible student-athletes earning recognition. Among those honored was Melchiorre, a sophomore biochemistry major who was also announced as a Google Cloud Academic All-District Second Team member in November.
