  • Carsen Edwards matched a career high with 40 points, going 15 of 26 from the field and 7 of 14 from 3-point range … the 26 field goal attempts made him the first Purdue player with 25+ field goal attempts since Chad Austin had 25 attempts against Penn State on Feb. 21, 1998 … Edwards has made seven 3-pointers in a game twice the year, becoming the first Purdue player since E'Twaun Moore (2010-11 season) to have two games of 7 or more trifectas in the same season … Edwards now has two 40-point games in his career, tied for the fifth most in a career in school history (Rick Mount – 13; Terry Dischinger – 9; Dave Schellhase – 7; Glenn Robinson – 5) … his 40-point performance was the seventh time a player has reached 40 points in Frank Erwin Center history (1977-78 was first season) … it's the most in the facility since Kansas State's Denis Clemente scored 44 on Jan. 31, 2009 … it's the most in a regulation game since Texas' Reggie Freeman scored 43 on Dec. 14, 1996, vs. Fresno State … his 28 points in the second half alone were the second most in a half in Erwin Center history … he scored 25 of Purdue's first 29 points in the second half … Edwards has scored at least 10 points in 30 straight games and has at least 19 points in all 10 games this season … over the last 18 games dating to last year, Edwards has two 40-point outings and two more 30-point games … Edwards surpassed 1,300 career points in the loss and now ranks eighth on the school's career 3-pointers made list (185) … Edwards became the seventh player this year with 40 points in a game and only the second high-major player to do so (45 by Markus Howard, Marquette vs. Kansas State) … Edwards becomes the 10th player since 2010-11 to have 40 points in a game with three or fewer free throw attempts, and the first to do so against a high-major opponent.

AUSTIN, Texas - Carsen Edwards shot. And shot. And shot. And then, he shot some more. When he looked up at the end of the game, the star Boilermaker guard had notched a career-high 40 points playing back in his home state. But it wasn't enough on this day in Austin, Texas.

Final: Texas 72, Purdue 68.

This loss stings, just like the other narrow defeats the Boilermakers have suffered this season ... the 89-83 loss to Virginia Tech, the 73-72 defeat at Florida State.

Now, this gut punch delivered courtesy of the Longhorns.

Purdue had a chance to seize control late in what was a see-saw battle. The Boilermakers had the ball with under 10 seconds left and trailing 70-68. Perhaps Purdue could steal this game. Just get the ball to Edwards for one last shot in what would be a signature way for the All-American to end this game. But Edwards was double-teamed, and redshirt freshman Aaron Wheeler found himself in a corner with the ball. And he turned it over.

Edwards would get no last shot. No one for Purdue would.

There would be no bow on his homecoming for Edwards, who grew up dreaming of playing in burnt orange and white. He wore Texas gear to high school and had it hanging in his bedroom. It was all Hook 'em all the time for Edwards as a kid. But Texas didn't recruit Edwards. So, he took his ball and ample skills to Purdue, where he has become a star.

The Atascocita, Texas, native made Texas regret not recruiting, delivering a performance to remember by hitting 15-of-26 shots and 7-of-14 from 3-point land. But, it wasn't enough vs. a Longhorn team that found its stroke.

Texas entered the contest on a three-game losing skid, scoring just 59 and 53 points in its last two games. A big issue: Poor shooting. Texas was hitting just 40 percent from the field and 29 percent from 3-point range entering the day. But the Longhorns found their stoke today

Texas shot 49 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range vs. the Boilers. Purdue knew that to win it had to play good defense, the type it played when it suffocated No. 23 Maryland in a 62-60 win in its last game. Alas, the Boilers didn't deliver.

Matt Painter's team also needed more offense from its supporting cast, but Matt Haarms was the only other Boiler in double-figures with 10 points. The bench produced just seven points

Purdue will try to get back on a winning track Saturday when it plays Notre Dame in the Crossroads Classic in Indianapolis.
