ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Carsen Edwards and Ryan Cline combined for 34 points but were the only Purdue players in double figures as No. 7 Michigan defeated the 19th-ranked Boilermakers 76-57 at the Crisler Center on Saturday.
The loss drops Purdue to 5-3 overall and ended the Boilermakers' four-game winning streak in Big Ten openers. Michigan improved to 8-0 on the season.
The Boilermakers started slow, falling behind 13-4 at the first media timeout as Michigan made five of its first six shots. Purdue crawled to within 21-16, but Michigan then embarked on a 10-0 run to grab a 31-16 lead with 10:23 remaining in the half. Purdue would trail 44-28 at halftime.
In the second half, Purdue would get to 62-50 with 6:55 to play on an Aaron Wheeler 3-pointer, but the Wolverines countered with an 8-0 run to push the lead to 20 at 70-50 before final 76-57 margin.
The Boilermakers shot just 35.5 percent against the nation's top-rated defense, while going 9 of 24 from 3-point range. Purdue was outrebounded 36-33, but had just nine turnovers to Michigan's 12. Purdue scored zero points off Michigan's 12 turnovers.
Carsen Edwards tallied 19 points and three assists to pace Purdue for his 28th straight game of scoring in double figures. Ryan Cline added 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting, including 3 of 5 from long range. Over the last six games, Cline is 27 of 53 (.509) from 3-point range.
Purdue returns home for the first time since Nov. 23, when it hosts No. 24-ranked Maryland on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
