ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. - The Purdue women's basketball team bounced back from their opening-day loss and picked up a 70-59 victory over Ole Miss in the second round of the 2018 Paradise Jam on Friday at the University of the Virgin Islands. Junior Dominique Oden scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the first half and dished out a season-high six assists as Purdue improved to 5-1
Oden came out of the gate firing, scoring the Boilermakers' first 10 points, including a pair of triples, and pushing her team out to an early lead. Classmate Fatou Diagne joined in on the early efforts, putting together two points, three rebounds and three assists in the opening quarter on her way to a career-best effort. However the Rebels kept pace early on as they hit nine-of-13 in the first quarter and Purdue led 22-19 after the period.
The Boilermaker post players sparked a 10-0 run to start the second quarter as Diagne, junior Ae'Rianna Harris, sophomore Tamara Farquhar and freshman Nyagoa Gony combined to push Purdue out to a 32-19 lead. Harris pushed on, scoring six of her 11 points in the quarter and the Boilermakers took a 38-24 edge to the locker room.
Purdue extended its lead in the third quarter behind a burst from Farquhar and fellow sophomore Karissa McLaughlin, as Farquhar scored six of her 10 points and McLaughlin added five of her nine points. A 3-pointer from sophomore Lyndsey Whilby pushed the advantage to 20 points late in the frame and the Boilermakers appeared in total control.
A 3-pointer from freshman Kayana Traylor gave the Boilermakers their biggest lead of the game, 62-40, early in the fourth, but Ole Miss would stage a comeback effort down the stretch. The Rebels used a 15-1 run to close to within eight points, 63-55, with 2:32 to play, but that would be as close as they would get as a beautiful rebound tip from Harris to Farquhar for a finish and a foul righted the ship for the Boilermakers and they wrapped up their fifth win of the season.
Oden added a season-high six assists, five rebounds and two steals to her scoring total, while Harris added seven rebounds to her 11 points, and Farquhar chipped in three blocks with her second double-figure scoring game of the season. Diagne finished with career-high totals of six points, seven rebounds and three assists, and McLaughlin finished with nine points and four rebounds.
The Boilermakers scored 34 of their 70 points on extra opportunities, converting 13 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points, and 17 Ole Miss turnovers to 19 points.
Ole Miss fell to 3-3 with the loss and had three players in double figures, led by senior Crystal Allen with 13 points. Fellow senior La'Karis Salter added 11 points and nine rebounds and junior Jhileiya Dunlap totaled 10 points and four rebounds.
Purdue plays its final game of the Paradise Jam tomorrow, facing No. 2 UConn at 7:30 p.m. ET, live on FloHoops.
