ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. - The Purdue women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Thursday, falling to St. John's 68-62 in the first game of the 2018 Paradise Jam. The Boilermakers fell behind early and were never able to fully recover despite 25 points from sophomore Karissa McLaughlin and 17 points and 10 rebounds from junior Ae'Rianna Harris.
The Red Storm came out red hot and never really cooled off Thursday, hitting on 48.3 percent from the field, including a season-best 6-of-14 from 3-point range. Four different players totaled 14 points for St. John's and sophomore Qadashah Hoppie hit a back-breaking 3-pointer in the final minutes to account for the final distance.
After falling behind by 10 in the final quarter the Boilers rallied with a 6-0 run behind Harris and McLaughlin, and after a jumper from St. John's junior Alisha Kebbe, freshman Cassidy Hardin drained a 3 to make it 60-57 Red Storm with 2:52 to play. The Boilermakers got the ensuing stop, but a missed shot and turnover prevented Purdue from getting any closer. St. John's responded with Hoppie's triple, beating the shot clock for just her second bucket of the game.
McLaughlin's 25 points were a career high, hitting 9-of-14 from the field and 3-of-7 from distance, while adding three assists, three rebounds and two steals. Harris posted her third double-double of the year, moving into a tie for 10th on Purdue's career list with Christa LaCroix. Harris added two assists, three blocks and a steal, hitting 7-of-10 from the floor. Sophomore Tamara Farquhar had a great first half for the Boilermakers with six points and three rebounds, and freshman Kayana Traylor had five points and three assists off the bench.
