CHARLESTON, S.C. - The 23rd-ranked Purdue men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling in the championship game of the Charleston Classic to No. 16 Virginia Tech 89-83. Junior Carsen Edwards finished with 26 points in the finals, setting an event record with 80 points over the three tournament games and earning all-tournament honors.
 
The Boilermakers held a 44-36 advantage at the half behind a combined 24 points from Edwards and junior teammate Evan Boudreaux. Purdue hit on 56.7 percent from the field in the opening period, including seven-of-15 from 3-point range, as senior Grady Eifert added eight points and three rebounds as was one-of-five Boilermakers to hit from distance.
 
The Hokies dropped 53 second-half points, converting a scorching 64.3 percent from the field, including six-of-nine from 3, and converted 11-of-17 at the free throw line as they played the final 10 minutes of regulation in the bonus. Virginia Tech had three players surpass the 20-point mark, combining for 71 points, including 41 in the second half.
 
Edwards' 80 points breaks the previous Charleston Classic record of 78 points set by Carl Jones of St. Joseph's in 2011. He was joined in double figures Sunday by Boudreaux and senior Ryan Cline as Boudreaux tallied 18 points and seven rebounds, while Cline added 14 points and four assists.
