Nov. 19 Update: This story has been updated with a correction. Tessa Wrightson broke the freshman record in the 100 back instead of just tying it. The 100 back freshman record was incorrectly listed as 54.54 in our record book when in fact Jackie Smailis' freshman-record time from 2016 was actually 54.56.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Taite Kitchel was an A finalist in both butterfly events and Tessa Wrightson eclipsed the program's freshman record in the 100 backstroke, highlighting the weekend sessions of the IU invitational for No. 17 Purdue women's swimming.

The Boilermakers finished in fifth place in the team scoring with 613.5 points. The three-day, six-session meet was among the fastest in the country this week. No. 7 NC State was tops in the women's team scoring.

Wrightson won the C final of the 100 back with a time of 54.54 Friday, breaking teammate Jackie Smailis' first-year benchmark from the 2016 Big Ten Championships. The time also moved Wrightson into fifth place overall in program history. Jade Knueppel also broke a freshman record this week via her 50 freestyle time of 23.06 in Thursday's prelims. That time bested Carly Marshall's record from the 2012 Big Ten Championships.

Kitchel posted Purdue season bests and NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cut) as an A finalist in both the 100 and 200 fly. She improved on her prelim time in the finals of both events, taking fourth in the 200 at 1:57.38 and sixth in the 100 at 52.95, a mark which was only four hundredths of a second off her career best and just a tenth of a second behind Kylie Vogel's program record from 2015.

Kitchel also posted a career-best time and B Cut in the 400 IM (4:17.04), improving on her fifth-fastest time in program history.

Jinq En Phee (1:00.06) placed fourth in the A final of the 100 breaststroke, finishing just seven hundredths of a second shy of breaking the one-minute mark in the event for the second time this season. Cady Farlow was also an A finalist in the event. In the 200 breast, Phee lowered her prelim time by 2.44 seconds while winning the C final. Her time of 2:13.16 stands as a team season best.

Jackie Smailis and Danielle Auckley teamed with Phee and Kitchel on the 200 medley relay team that posted the third-fastest time (1:38.75) in program history Friday.
